Description

Pan water vessel of San
Late Western Zhou Dynasty
C.9th century to 771 B.C.E.
The inscription records the settlement of a territorial dispute between two adjacent feudal states of San and Ze, giving a full account of the joint-survey by all parties involved of the lands to be surrendered, as well as Ze’s oath taking scene.

The contractual contents are rarely seen in bronze inscriptions.

The 350-character text is executed in bold and unrestrained manner, with diverse and rich structures, indeed an utmost paragon of zhuan script in the history of calligraphy.
